The Perfect Concealer

The year is drawing to a close and the biggest parties of the year are about to take place as we countdown to 2012. There really is not a better time to look for some fabulous beauty solutions, so this week I have decided to review some regulars in my makeup bag and weigh up the pros and cons of each to find THE PERFECT CONCEALER.

First on the agenda is an old favourite of mine that I often splurge on whilst roaming the aisles of Duty Free shopping in the Airport. Benefit’s Erase Paste  comes in a small pot which you would think is pretty bad value, but actually it lasts for a surprisingly long time. It is one of those products that lives by the philosophy “a little bit goes a long way”.

Price: £18.00

Why buy?
·         Good value for the amount it lasts
·         Great coverage
·         Compact design and packaging- a handbag MUST
Why not?
·         There are cheaper alternatives
·         Thick substance with a not-so-matte finish means that it can look shiny! Add a layer of powder to minimise the shiny face look

Overall: A solid 7.5/10

Next up is the more expensive option of the three. Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat has been branded as one of the best and most revolutionary make up product of its time. So, naturally back in the early 2000’s, I ventured out to the shops to buy this so-called “miracle product”. I have to say that I was rather disappointed. It was going to take some astounding results to live up to the hype that was surrounding it but frankly, I just do not see how it works that well. It works best for under the eyes as the brush is soft for the thinner skin surrounding the eye and it gives light and natural looking coverage. But if you want to use it anywhere on the face, it is quite a disappointing product and lacks decent coverage.
Price: £22.00

Why buy?
·         For tired eyes and older skin that is not as prone to blemishes, this product could be just perfect
·         Made with some (and I mean only some!) nice natural ingredients that promote anti-aging
Why not?
·         Far too expensive for how long it lasts
·         If you have skin prone to blemishes, this is not the product for you

Overall: A solid 6/10 if you accept it for what it is. Good coverage for under the eyes, the rest…forget it.

So, some may say “saving the best till last” and in my opinion, this is certainly the case! I came across STILA when I was receiving some PR samples and I must say, I fell in love with the brand. The mascara is delightful as well as the stunning shades seen in their seasonal eye pallettes. However, the best product in the range is definitely the Perfecting Concealer. It comes in a few shades but all blend in very well and the coverage is very impressive. It is lightweight, natural and it lasts forever. I bought one of tubes back in October, use it every day and its still at least ¾ of the way full!

Price: £16.00

Why buy?
·         Great coverage
·         Great value
·         Lasts FOREVER
·         Tiny tube- perfect for any handbag
Why not?
·         I really don’t have anything for this section. Says it all!

Overall: A solid 10/10 product- one which I think I would struggle to cope without!!

Right beautiful people- it is time for me to get prepared for my NYE party. So, enjoy the rest of the year, and I shall see you back here in 2012 with more posts about the best beauty must-haves!

New York City Nails

I am departing from the British shores for one week only and heading to the Big Apple for a festive-filled trip of fun, catching up and of course…shopping! I always feel that being on trend from head to toe is a must when roaming the streets of Madison Avenue or splashing the cash in Bendall’s so I have decided to dedicate this post to the care of your precious hands and take a look at the best winter trend colours for the perfect manicure finish.

Notting Hill by Nails inc.

Bring abit of London life to the Upper East Side with this dusky pink shade from Nails inc. Inspired from the pastelle pallette seen at numerous A/W shows, this shade is ultra-feminine and goes perfectly with earthy tones in your apparel. Pair with a tan Mulberry Bayswater and you are good to go!!

Limited Edition Trendsetting Trio by Chanel
This slightly more expensive combo of varnishes are the perfect essentials for this season. The Peridot is a colour fusion polish which will brighten up any plain day look. The Graphite is the perfect accessory for the party season and the Black Satin is a classic must-have that achieves the perfect chic yet practical and classy day look.

Peach Mebla, Indigo and Fuchsia by Barry M
For the more budget-conscious, try these little Barry M numbers. Peach Melba is a great neutral shade adding a touch of feminitity to your Autumn/Winter wardrobe. The shade comes out very thin so I would recommend at least 3 coats and a finishing top coat to achieve the best colour. The Indigo shade is ELECTRIC and looks so striking against the essential LBD. Lastly, the Fuchsia shade is the ultimate girly and fun option to achieve a young and vibrant feminine look. As with Peach Melba, I would recommend a few layers to get the best results.

So, my fellow Londoners….I bid thee a farewell and I shall be posting on all my beautiful finds from the Big City very shortly.

Peace,

PICK OF THE WEEK: Model Co Fibre Lashes

In the past, I have found it REALLY hard to find a decent mascara that I can depend on. Since about April of last year, I have collected tonnes of different brands and makes of mascaras which has created quite a substantial collection of half used mascaras! Instead of using just one, I use a combination; one that is good for separating, one that is good for volume and others that I use every now and again to mix it up. My all time favourite which is the best I have tried so far is Dior Show, but the price is quite off-putting, as it doesn’t last a great deal.

My makeup tends to look the same both day and night because unlike the majority of girls, I refuse to wear fake eyelashes…I just look like a dragqueen in them. With Christmas approaching, the inevitable increase in “going out” is upon us and I have been on the search for eye makeup that really does go “the extra mile”.

I came across a product at work, which in all honesty, I was a little skeptical about. However, after trying a sample, my opinion has changed. Model Co Fibre lashes are essentially instant lash extensions but with half the trouble and a quarter of the costs. In the box, you get two products. One is the EXTENSION MASCARA and the other is the LASH FIBRES. After one application of the EXTENSION MASCARA, the revolutionary brush-on LASH FIBRES adhere to your own eye lashes, acting like instant lash extensions. Another coat of the lightweight EXTENSION MASCARA formula secures the fibres in place, individually coating each lash for false-looking, luscious lashes. The more you apply, the more dramatic the result.
They work by adhering to each individual lash separating and defining for a super thick and luscious look. The great thing about them is that the y are smudge and tear proof but also easily slides off with warm water to avoid those unattractive panda eyes! The fibre lashes are smudge & tear proof but slides off easily with warm water so no more panda eyes. They also contain Bees Wax and Carnauba Wax which help keep lashes soft and nourished.
One major tip is that it is important to look down whilst applying the fibres because if you are like me and wear contact lenses, they can fall into the eye and be a little painful. But luckily, that did not happen because I looked down, so bear this in mind.

Some other interesting facts about the product:
·         Each FIBRE LASH product is the equivalent of having (a minimum) of 40 sets of false eye lashes applied.
·         With each FIBRE LASH product offering at least a full months use and working-out at a mere 77pence per use, how can you resist?

I would really recommend this product if you are a wearer of fake eyelashes but are bored of them falling off and looking a little OTT.  This product is great value for money and also shows really dramatic results in minutes!

They are available at Boots for around £35.

A solid 9/10 product! Christmas party season essential.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Oil

This Friday, I present to you…A miracle product AND a step by step guide to achieving the perfect self tan look.

I am a keen self-tanner on a night out and I love the bronzed shimmering look but am yet to find a nice natural looking finish (preferably one that masks the smell of fake tan). Well, this is where Nuxe has come to the rescue.  This fabulous shimmer oil can be used on both the body and face and the best thing about it, is that it can be used over other products such as self tanners and moisturizers without making them blotchy or affected in any way.

I will now talk you through a tried and tested way of getting a really great natural winter tan look, all in the comfort of your own home. I would highly recommend doing this process the day before you intend to go out as opposed to the night of a big party.

Bronzed Goddess Step 1:

Firstly, run a nice hot bath and use a tan detox product such as St Tropez Detox set. It is really important to use one of these sorts of products at least once a fortnight if you are a regular self-tanner because it gets rid of all the residue that make block your skins pores. They are so easy and simple to use, all you have to do is simply drop a few caps worth of the oil into your hot bath and let it do the rest.

Bronzed Goddess Step 2:

Then it is best to exfoliate from head to toe. It is important to do this as it will make sure that your skin is soft and free of any dead skin which could potentially clog up your fake tan and make it very unpleasent and unattractive!
I would recommend buying exfoliating gloves (Superdrug, Boots etc all sell them). Paired with an exfoliating scrub, such as The Sanctuary Body scrub or Model Co Tan Remover, your skin will be soft and supple and streak free in no time.

Bronzed Goddess Step 3:
After you have rinsed yourself from any exfoliating residue, make sure you moisturize, especially around your ankles, knees and elbows.

Bronzed Goddess Step 4:

Once completely dry, apply a self tan product with a mitt (ALWAYS USE A MITT). I would recommend St Tropez original self tan mousse for a nice bronzed colour or Model Co Mousse for a longer lasting tan. Use the mitt to apply the mouse in circular motions and always try and get someone to help you with difficult to reach areas such as your back. Two top tips: Try and do the tanning in a room with as much natural lighting as properly and Do not forget your feet and hands!

Bronzed Goddess Step 5:
Lastly, leave your tan to dry for at least 45 minutes before putting on clothes and then sleep on it and relax. When you get up in the morning, have a shower and make sure you get rid of all the excess. You can make this streak free by lathering shower gel and cleaning all over.

Bronzed Goddess Step 6:
Lastly, about two hours before you go out, use a different mitt then used the day before and apply a light layer of Instant tan. I would recommend St Tropez Wash off or Rimmer Instant. Once dry (around 15 minutes), it is time to apply the Nuxe Oil to your body. Use all over, including face, for a beautiful shimmer finish.

If you follow these guidelines, you really will have a natural glow- tried and tested J

The Solution to all your Winter Beauty Problems...

That time of year has come upon us. The dramatic temperature drop, the need for at least four layers of clothing and of course, the Christmas lights, window displays and tunes being wafted into our eyes and ears at every possible moment. So, to prepare you for the holiday season, I have decided that it is time to give you a beauty rundown, especially for the upcoming winter season. This post gives you some top tips from past experiences and articles I have read and a review of tried and tested products that will offer a sense of warmth and comfort in the depths of winter.

TOP THREE WINTER TIPS:
  • Start the day with a hot shower. Then, before you get out, turn it down to cold for about fifteen seconds, and then to warm, and then to cold...repeat for around 2-4 minutes. It sounds odd but is  a simple hydrotherapy technique which revitalizes the skin by stimulating the flow of blood through the body. It is both invigorating and highly beneficial to the skin.
  • Exfoliate a few times a week. This will remove dead cells and allow the skin to absorb extra moisture. The oil which we all complain about in the Summer is no longer being produced because of cooler winter temperatures and central heating. The skin therefore looses the water which should be retained in the lower dermis of the skin. This can lead to premature aging of the skin and fine lines, whilst your skin can appear puffy and grey...so EXFOLIATE.
  • Sleep well and drink a lot water. Simple.

First up is the FACE. At this time of year, it is oh so important to take care of your skin to avoid dullness and dryness. One of the first major changes is to make the shift from a water-based moisturiser to an oil-based one. All moisturisers  work differently depending on skin type, so it is important to look around until you find one that works for you. Because I have sensitive skin, I use a water based moisturiser during the summer and an oil base during the winter to even out the weather and what it does to my skin. It is also important to cleane, tone and exfoliate regularly.

The first product I recommend is Burts Bees Radiance Day Creme.
The creme is lightweight and filled with botanical oils that deep cleanse the skin. The smell is delightful, it contains scents and ingredients that promote calmness and aides sleep. I have tried a variety of different day moisturisers, however this one gets my vote because of its lightwight texture and natural ingredients. Sometimes I feel that moisturisers are very heavy and actually clog my pores, but this one is so lightweight, you can barely feel it.

The next product I would recommend is for people who suffer from slight early morning blues! I for one, really struggle with dark circles under my eyes. Some beauticians have said it is a lack of Zinc in my diet, others says its irregular sleep patterns. I have been looking for a miracle product to help with this and The Sanctuary do a range of "brigtening" products so I thought I would give them ago. I am absolutely addicted to the Brightening Eye Gel. You apply it after a standard cleansing/toning/moisturising session at night and then also when you wake up in the morning for a bright and uplifting start to the day.

The last product for the face that I recommend is Mac Strobe Liquid. It is  aimed for party goers who need more sleep and workaholics who cannot switch off so I knew I had to try it. It is a lighter version of the ever popular Strobe Cream and again, uses botanical ingredients for a light yet effective moisturiser. The thing that is so great about it, is that is actually does make you glow! It gives your skin a very radiant sheen to it and looks very natural. A massive thumbs up from me!

LIPS:
During the winter, one of the biggest problems is lipcare. It is so easy to get the occasional cold sore and cracked lips, which is not only pretty unsightly but also rather painful. My top tips to avoid this winter nightmare is to make sure you get a good intake of Vitamin B as that will really help fight cracked lips. If they are feeling particularly dry, try a soaked dark tea bag on your lips for 4-6 minutes to encourage extra moisture. All this said and done, you cannot fight nature and the harm it can cause; this is where the products come in.
Carmex Original is my personal favourite in lip care and nothing really comes close in terms of its effectiveness. Its purpose is to protect from the weather, rain or shine, which it does extremely effectively. It contains germ-killing menthol and phenol, speeding the healing process for chapped lips. The great thing about Carmex, is that it also doubles up as a medicine for cold sores so it really is a winter handbag MUST.
One more tip for great winter lips is to ensure that all lip balm/stick/gloss is throughly washed off at night to allow your lips to breathe. It can have a counter effect if you leave residue on your lips...and no-one wants that!

HAIR: Unfortuanely, one of the biggest winter “no-nos” for hair is blow-drying. The heat dries the hair out, on top of the cold temperature doing the same thing. It is important at this time of year to ensure that your hair is HYDRATED. A great hydrating conditioner, hair mask and shampoo are a must.

The shampoo you want to use is Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturing Shampoo. It is made with a relaxing floral aroma blended with certified organic palmarosa, ylang ylang and rose geranium, with a hint of vanilla. The smell is insatiable and the results are astounding. I noticed a difference instantly; my dry and brittle ends immediately felt sleeker and stronger. It does, however, take a while to create a lather, resulting in ou using a fair bit of the shampoo itself. The bottles cost around £18, so it is something to bare in mind if you are trying to be economical and cost-efficient.

Any moisturing conditioner will be very good when paired with a strong shampoo, and Superdrug do some great moisturing conditioning treatments. However, if you are feeling like you really want to invest in a product that will fully transform a real dryness problem, my recommendation would be Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask. It is made to improve moisture and also improve elasticity in the hair for a more bouncy, volumous look. It is best to preserve this product as it is slightly on the pricey side, but using it once a week/fornight will significantly benefit your hair.

I hope this has given you some handy hints and tips for this winter season. It really is important to follow a few simple guidelines to ensure that you are looking after your skin and hair in the winter months.
Peace,

PICK OF THE WEEK: Model Co. Lip Lights Lip Gloss

I am a slight creature of habit with my beauty essentials, therefore my Chanel luscious lip-gloss very rarely gets replaced with a newbie. HOWEVER,  I discovered this little gem about two weeks again and since, it has not left my side.

I am a bit of a sucker for gimmicks and this trusty lip gloss is no exception. Not only does it come in several fabulous seasonal colours, it also has a mirror on the side and built-in light for your convenience. Whether you are running for your train in the morning or topping up your lippy on the dance floor, this lip-gloss is the one you need to get!

Also, interesting story for you...I literally could not find my keys in my MASSIVE handbag last week, but luckily, the Lip lights gloss came to the rescue when I simply opened the lid and used the light to aide my search for the keys….a truly multi-purpose beauty essential!

I have since whipped it out in the mornings on my walk up the Oxford Circus tube escalators and I get the odd “oooh” and double take from passersby, simply admiring this fabulous little invention. The actual lip-gloss lasts a good few hours once applied and to say I literally apply it every two seconds, it does not appear to be even showing any signs of running out.

I am aware that Model Co stockists are fairly hard to come across....this was a PR sample, and I have since researched that I cannot get it here in the UK in shops. But you really must make the effort to get hold of one...use your initiative! I found this site that stocks them:

GO OUT AND GRAB THIS GIRLS- it is not to be missed..

Okay, so I was in Selfridges the other day and I literally came across THE MOST DELIGHTFUL Christmas treats that I am 100% going to purchase to get in the festive spirit!!

You know at Christmas time you traditionally pull the cracker just before tucking into a nice roast and then you find a small pack of playing cards or a mini comb? At first you think it is kinda cool because its miniature- you think you might actually use it, but truth is; you don’t. It ends up in the bin alongside the terribly unfunny joke that was also in the cracker...

This year, why not indulge in a touch of luxury for your Christmas cracker needs and purchase some of Lancôme’s beauty filled crackers! Each cracker is filled with a delightful  Lancôme beauty treats including: Génifique 7ml, Visionnaire 7ml, Bi–Facil 30ml, L'Absolu Rouge Mini, Juicy Tube 7ml, Hypnôse Mascara Mini), festive hat and beauty tip.

Not only are they spicing up our cracker pulling experiences, they have also created a Lancôme Advent calendar! But this time, it is not just Lancôme goodies- it is a delightful array of little beauty treats.

The selection includes:

Tom Ford: Jasmine Rouge

Tom Ford is my guilty pleasure.

I absolutely adore the man himself and am fascinated when I read about his career and the way he transformed one of the worlds biggest fashion brands. His first perfume Black Orchid did not disappoint when I bought it a few years back. It is my all time favourite smell. I am quite a fan of fragrances for men because I like the strong spicy based smells as opposed to a floral, feminine scent.  That is exactly what Black Orchid is like- its strong, spicy scent literally lasts all day and although it is not to everyones taste, it is very difficult and always invites and intrigues question.

So, when I saw that Tom Ford was bringing out some new scents, I knew I had to try them out.
The fragrance that I opted to try is the new Jasmine Rouge, retailing at £270 for 250ml- available at Selfridges and Harrods amongst other limited stockists.

Looking at the description, Tom Ford Jasmin Rouge is a" voluptuous, saturated, spiced floral. An unexpected blend of precious sambac jasmine sepals absolute, an ingredient never used before in perfumery with dusky clary sage and rich spices, it unveils a new facet of jasmine's erotic decadence. Jasmin Rouge is as audacious as lacquered red lips. Its deep red bottle evokes lush and hedonistic glamour."

Jasmine Rouge was created by Rodrigo Flores-Roux and includes notes of bergamot, mandarin, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, white pepper, broom flower, jasmine sambac, neroli, ylang ylang, clary sage, Mexican vanilla, leather, woody notes, amber and labdanum.

On first site of the bottle, I had to agree with the above description- the packaging itself OOZES glamour. The first few hours of its wear was great;  indolic jasmine, spices and creamy ylang-ylang layered with red fruity notes, just beautiful. However, it pains me to say that the scent wore off extremely quickly and the base that was left was very disappointing.

All in all, I would say that the new fragrance is not worth the £270 that it retails at- I much prefer the original scent Black Orchid and will forever choose that over this new range.

Peace,

O x

PICK OF THE WEEK: Moroccan Oil Original Treatment

So Friday is time for PICK OF THE WEEK!

And this Friday, I have chosen my new MUST HAVE beauty essential. You know when you are a little reluctant to pay quite abit for a product, but then you finally suck it up and realize how worth it it really is!?! Well, this is EXACTLY how I felt about the Moroccan Oil products.

One of my friends from the US has THE MOST AMAZING HAIR you can imagine (yes, JujuBee, that’s you!) and although her hair is naturally beautiful, she also swears by Brazilian Blowdrys (Keratin treatment) and the use of Moroccan Oil.Moroccan Oil as a starter (Brazillian blowdrys are a little out of my price range atm). I must say, I was delighted. I ended up investigating which product to get and was torn between the Original Oil or the selection of Shampoos and Conditioners. I decided to go for the Original Oil for Light hair and tried it out that very evening. So, in need of abit of a hair pick-me-up, I decided to suck it up and get the

It comes in a very large bottle and lasts a lifetime because you only have to use a pea-sized amount. I washed my hair as normal and then dried it with a towel quickly. I then applied small amount (which smelt AMAZING) on the ends and slightly over the top of my head and then headed straight over to my blowdryer! Within minutes I could tell how silky and shiny my hair felt. I colour my hair quite abit so it tends to get a wee bit dry (sob sob), but this was literally the freshest it has felt in years!

I now do not go a day without using the oil after I wash  my hair and recommend it to anyone who is seeking a hair pick-me-up. It is a little pricey but I can safely say that it is worth EVERY PENNY! They also have a range of shampoos and a hair mask that I am dying to try but might just have to wait until my next pay check. And now that Christmas is coming up, it may be worth investiagting their Gift sets for Sister, besties and Mumsies!

Peace,

Nails inc AMAZINGNESS.

Hello beauty lovers,

STOP PRESS. I have some VERY exciting news!

Is anyone else here a diehard fan of Gossip Girl? Love the looks, clothes, style and general fabulous-ness of all the characters? Well, this winter nails inc have very excitingly created a new range of Gossip Girl polishes... just in time for the party season. Released earlier on this week, the buzz around this new range has been phenomenal. I attended the nails inc. Bloggers event this evening and met Thea Green, the creator and founder of nails inc as well as mingling with fellow beauty bloggers. There are SO many exciting new products about to be released but for now, I shall give you a little bit of an inside scoop into exactly what the new polishes come out like and which ones are the best (in my opinion, of course).

The new range is inspired by the three style icons of the show; Blair, Serena and Lily. Each collection provides a different shade of black with an overglaze to be used as a combo together. If you have seen the shatter nail polishes by OPI, Barry M and nails inc, it is quite similar to the effect, but just alot neater and more detailed as the overglaze is made of individual shards of colour.

First off, we have the Lily collection (and my personal favourite). The plum black nail polish is gorgeous on its own but when paired with the red/green overglaze, it creates a gorgeous effect which looks really classy and perfect for the party season. Pairing this with a LBD would be the PERFECT combo for your work do! I really like the way that this nail polish really captures Lily's Manhattan Socialite style and it works well for both younger and older ladies.

Next up is the Serena collection. Personally, this one is my least favourite as it is very subtle to the point where you have to look VERY closely to actually see that there is an effect on your nail polish. Saying that, if subtly is your bag then this may be the polish for you! The patent black base is stunning on its own and has a gorgeous sheen to it. However, the electric blue overglaze does struggle to show up over such a prominient base colour.

Lastly, is the Blair collection. I really llike this nail polish duo- it is really fun, trendy and youthful. But I did notice that it chipped slightly quicker than the other polishes as the teal black polish base is quite thin compared to the other black bases seen in the Lily and Serena collections. The blue/green overglaze shows up a treat against the black base and if you want a quick and easy but effective look for a night out, this may be the look for you. Just make sure you put on a good finishing coat to make sure it stays CHIP FREE!

At the event, we all got free manicures from the amazing team at the South Molton street Salon, all in the with the new Magnetic Range. At first, I was a little sceptical but I LOVE the magnetic effect and its pretty fun to watch it being done too.  I chose the purple colour and I must say, I cannot stop staring at my nails! LOVE IT!

If you ever get the chance, pop into the salon. The staff are so so friendly and the range of colours and treatments are really impressive. I would highly recommend the treatment for weak and bendy nails if they have been damaged by gels/acrylics, as well as the use of the cuticle oil.

Here are a few piccys from the event- and the goody bags really were DELIGHTFUL!

Right beautiful people, it is time for me to get my beauty sleep. I will be posting very shortly with reviews on new and upcoming products as well as recommending some great gift ideas for Christmas (yesssss, its coming!). GOODNIGHT, and remember to Live fast and die pretty <3

Peace,
